Irrigation Leaks

Notice a little increase in your water bill? Some irrigation system leaks are not noticeable particularly this time of year with the rain and cold. Eventually the leak will rear it's head and will need to be repaired. If you have a separate shut off for your irrigation system, you can shut the system off until your ready to use it again and the leak may be more easily detectable.

Too cold for irrigation

This morning I saw an irrigation system trying to run while it was 22 degrees outside. I felt compelled to stop and turn it off. The system is probably going to be a wreck once it gets warmer.....

Irrigation Valve not working

When your irrigation valve isn't working you may know this from an error on your controller, or a zone that once was working has stopped, or it's leaking. In some cases some irrigation system valves can be repaired or rebuilt instead of replaced. Typically if the valve is leaking at the juntion to the pipe, it will require replacement. Be sure to ask your irrigation repair company in Atlanta if rebuilding your valve is an option. It is a less expensive solution to your problem.

Irrigation Companies and Irrigation Systems

Remember, no all things are created =. It's important to make sure your irrigation system meets minimum requirements established by law in 2005 with backflow prevention and rain sensors. While sensors are inexpensive, a good backflow prevention device can be the most expensive component of your irrigation system. Make sure when selecting an irrigation contractor, you compare not only price, product, warranty and what exactly you're getting for your hard earned money!

Monday, November 15, 2010

How to make sure your irrigation system doesn't run when it's freezing?

You don't want to wake up to an ice skating rink so...if you water your lawn into the winter months you need a Solar Sync or a rain freeze sensor which both prevent watering below certain temperatures. The Solar Sync will also use weather data to control the watering and thereby save you money. The Rain Freeze Sensor will to by just preventing watering during rain or while the sensor is wet.

Most important factors to consider when doing irrigation in Atlanta

Do you know what needs to be the first few things on your irrigation companies mind when they are installing your system? First should be proper design based on the water flow. Second should be installation of the most efficient system possible by using rain/freeze sensors, smart controllers, ET systems, pressure compensating heads and precision sprayer nozzles. Every component of your new irrigation system works together to create the efficient system you need to supplement the natural rainfall.

Irrigation Systems: High Water Bills

Don't always blame your irrigation system for an increase in your normal water bill. Of course, if there is an obvious leak on your system that's different. If you have a shut off, shut the system off if you notice a leak. Just turning off the controller (or clock) will not stop the flow of water.

If your irrigation system seems normal then check for leaking toliets, dripping faucets, etc. One of our employees had a high water bill, over a $300 increase, all due to a leaky toliet.

Irrigation Water Audits

Irrigation Water Audits are an excellent way to find out the efficiency of an irrigation system and what changes can be made to increase the efficiency and thereby, save money. A full water audit requires extensive knowledge, not just of irrigation, but of irrigation effiency products. Many commercial irrigation customers find that the audit and irrigation system upgrades pay for themselves in less than 2 years.

Irrigation Winterization

Many people will tell you that you do not need to winterize your irrigation system. Because weather is so unpredictable in Atlanta and the southeast we do recommend that you winterize your irrigation system. Most irrigation system's piping is installed well below the frost line but it's a small price to pay for peace of mind in knowing that your system will work well in the spring.

Friday, October 29, 2010

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

So your water bill has gone up since getting your irrigation system installed? You can expect that increase. An average 4 zone irrigation system running 3 days a week, for 20 minutes with 2 zones of rotors and 2 zones of sprayers using approximately 1,320 gallons of water each time it runs.

If you have an existing system and your water bill has increased you very well may have a leak. Check around for wet spots and run thru the system yourself to see if you have any heads leaking etc. If there is a leak and it is fixed by an irrigation company in Atlanta, if you provide proof to your water company they will typically make an adjustment.

Irrigation Repair Atlanta

NOAA's most recent report of predicted weather for Georgia is that it will be drier and warmer than usual. This is a major reason that if your irrigation system needs to be repaired, you should fix it now. Consider some efficiency nozzles and heads as well.

Irrigation System Repairs

Did you recently buy a new home with an irrigation system? A simple inspection can ensure that your system is in tip top shape to water. If there are irrigation system repairs to be made don't wait until the spring. After winter your problem could be worse.

New Irrigation System

When you get your quotes from different irrigation companies be sure that you are comparing "apples to apples." Different manufacturers and products provide different benefits so make sure you understand that say, for instance, your paying more your getting a more efficient head that will save you in the long run. When it comes to warranties, it's important that the company can back the warranty. A warranty is only as good as the company you use.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

Due to our relatively warmer winters, you can install your new irrigation system pretty much any time of year. As your bermuda grass goes dormant, this is an excellent time of year and you will see very little, if any impact, from the irrigation system installation. We've done system into December and January in which case we run through the system, winterize it (clear the water out from the lines) and come back in the spring and restart - all included in the installation cost. So it's really never to late to install your new irrigation system.

Irrigation Winterization

Many people ask if winterization of their irrigation system is really necessary here in the south. It is recommended because Atlanta is notorious for having inconsistent winters like last year where we had snow south of Atlanta but none in the mountains where you'd expect it. Water when frozen for long periods of time can damage your irrigation system so we believe it is important to winterize since the weather can be so unpredictable.

Monday, October 18, 2010

Irrigation Repair Atlanta

An irrigation valve is what controls which zone or station the water goes to by opening and closing. If you have an irrigation valve that is "humming" then it most certainly needs servicing. A "hum" is often an indication of a solenoid problem with a valve which is the component that receives the signal from the controller and opens and closes the valve.

Irrigation Repair

If you have an older irrigation system that needs substantial renovation and updating, my suggestion would be to look at both the repair costs and the cost the install a new system. Irrigation repair is very intricate and detailed. You really have to know your stuff to properly and effectively repair a system but it's often not as inexpensive as people think. In some cases, you can get a new irrigation system with a good warranty for the same or less than some repairs.

Irrigation Companies - Backflow

Make sure you know the difference in backflow prevention offered by irrigation companies. Dual check backflow versus Double Check backflow. While they sound the same they do not provide the same amount of backflow protection. A double check backflow device will afford you the highest protection available for your drinking water.

Want to really know how much money you can save on your water bill with water efficient products? Cost vs. Savings. Request a professional irrigation audit. Irrigation auditing is an easy way to see if updating your old system can save you money and I bet it can.

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

You've heard me throw around "ET" systems, smart controllers..etc. What do these things really mean to you? WATER SAVINGS=WATER EFFICIENCY...that's what. A basic ET system is something like Hunter's Solar Sync which reads temp, humidity, etc. based on regional settings and determines the optimal amount of watering. ET stands for evapotranspiration - which means this (in IG terms) - the rate at which water evaporates from the soil, plants, etc. Think this way it just rained say this morning; all day it was overcast, and humid thus not as much water evaporated from the soil and your plants therefore meaning you need less water next time your irrigation is scheduled (if tonight for instance).

Irrigation Winterization

Ok so the frost line in the south is what 1-2" at the MOST in north Georgia. Last year I didn't winterize my own irrigation system and had 7" of snow south of Atlanta when the mountains had none. There were issues in the spring. So my advice to you is..if you know anything about weather in Georgia you know you never know what you are going to get. Be safe & winterize your system. Either take an air compressor (no more than 50 psi) and blow out the lines or you could shut off the water supply, and run the system until it's dry (remembering it won't be completely dry without blowing it out)....unplug your controller to prevent damage from surges etc. If you have a maintenance plan for your irrigation system, and you should, this should be included.

Be smart about watering your lawn

With over 58% of our water usage going towards landscape watering, be smart when watering particularly this time of year. As the temperature lowers, so do evaporation rates and your landscape needs less water from your irrigation system.
Tomorrow proper winterization of your irrigation system.........even in the south.

Irrigation Systems

Irrigation Systems' products are ever-evolving and there have been made dramatic changes in the last 4-5 years. The primary focus with irrigation products have become efficiency and longevity. With certain manufacturers the longevity has always been a top priority although they may not have the most efficient products. With others it's all about watering effienctly. So when you are considering a new irrigation system, be sure your irrigation company shows you all the options available for your new system so you can chose which one is right for you.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Irrigation Companies and Irrigation Systems

Whether you're look for a new irrigation system or looking to repair or update an old one, the irrigation company that you choose is cruicially important. Cheaper is not always better and you may pay for it in the long run with just a higher water bill. I feel bad when customers called like yesterday, an older lady in south Atlanta phoned, she said "I had my new irrigation system put in about 4 months ago because I just couldn't water my garden any more but it's not working. I called the man who put it in and they won't call me. Can you help me?" We did. So when your considering that new irrigation system or irrigation repair, select wisely and make sure the company will back their work, for how long and check out their customer service record too. Look for companies that are members of the Irrigation Association, GGIA or have a true manufacturer affiliation too.

Automatic Irrigation Controllers

Some people have automatic irrigation controllers but yet continue to manually run their irrigation systems. I will never question your reasonining in doing so but you might need a rain sensor or inexpensive ET system that could eliminate you having to do so much work when you have that automatic irrigation system.

Thursday, September 23, 2010

Irrigation Repair & Maintenance

I cannot stress to you how much you should maintain your irrigation system just like your car. Maintenance will increase the longevity of your system and keep it working at its' most efficient. Typically a irrigation maintenance agreement is what will best serve you and this is definitely the time of year to look into that.

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Irrigation Atlanta

Did you know that winterizing your irrigation system could increase it's longevity. Since we have those most unpredictable winters here in Georgia and you never know what your going to get we encourage everyone to winterize their irrigation system. Guess what? We didn't winterize ours last year because we were in the middle of the Kia project and did you guess? Yes, we paid for it this year and had an issue for the first time this year on our 9 year old system.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Do you really care about how much irrigation water you use?

If you don't, you should. On the news last night they showed that even with the rain we've had this year and the floods from last September we are already experiencing drought conditions. We should pay attention to our outdoor watering habits. If everyone followed some simple rules, we would save a lot of water. First, water early morning or late evening never during the middle of the day. Secondly, be sure you have a rain sensor to prevent your system from running during rain. Is there a lot of water on your side walk or street? Adjust your sprinkler heads to avoid run-off. Simple steps can make huge impacts on our outdoor water usage.

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Irrigation Repair & Maintenance

You've heard me say before you should take care of your irrigation system just like you do a car so you get more life out of it. The best way to do that is the participate in an irrigation maintenance agreement where you get inspections, reduce costs on repairs and winterization as well as spring start-up. For more information email irrigationgirl@milleniumirrigation.com

Rain Sensor: Wireless or Wired

Everything seems wireless these days including rain sensors for your irrigation system. I think it is totally a personal preference whether you chose a wired rain sensor or wireless rain sensor as long as you chose a rain sensor! In some locations, upon installation, the wired rain sensor's wires are barely visible and that are less expensive.

Thursday, September 16, 2010

I'm Back: Difference between Irrigation Rain Sensor & Rain-Freeze Sensor

The State of Georgia has required rain sensors on all new irrigation systems for several years and some counties, like Forsyth, are taking it a step further by checking to make sure you get one with a new irrigation system.
A rain sensor keeps your system from running when it is raining or it senses moisture in it's sensor. Another great feature that can be combined with your rain sensor is a freeze shut off which that your irrigation system doesn't try to irrigate when it's below a certain temperature as well.
If you winterize your irrigation system, a rain sensor is perfect. If you are one of those who take chances with your irrigation system and Atlanta winter weather, you need a Rain-Freeze sensor.

Irrigation Systems Sprinkler Heads

Hunter makes an I-20 rotor that will enable you to turn it off while still running the rest of the sprinkler heads on that zone/station. Very cool, particularly if you make frequent changes to your landscape or need less water somewhere to prepare for planting (so it's not muddy)....Rainbird also makes a rotor that is similar but it is not standard with the shut-off so you will have to hadd it on as option on the 5000 series Rainbird rotors.
We used the I-20 (plastic version) at the Kia plant just so they would have that flexability later and would avoid a lot of maintenance costs.

Alternatives to county water connected irrigation systems

Did you know there are several alternatives to watering your landscape with the counties water? Alternatives such as rain capture systems and natural water systems (creeks, lakes, rivers) are the best alternatives to help you save money on watering your lawn with an irrigation system. Interested in learning more? Just give me a call 770-461-1776.

Commercial Irrigation Systems

Two-wire irrigation systems are becoming more common lately. Originally they started in Europe somewhere, they have become the best choice for commercial irrigation systems limiting the amount of wire in the ground and thereby limiting opportunities for problems. It's a great way to do a commercial irrigation system and definitely requires some expertise...if your considering a commercial project definitely consider a two-wire system and ask me questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Homeowners Associations: Irrigation Systems

With the cooler temps we've seen of late, many of us are getting a taste of the beautiful Georgia fall that is coming. So your HOA spent money sprucing up your neighborhood entrance and maintain it with landscape maintenance. What about the irrigation system. Now is the time to consider getting an irrigation maintenance agreement where for a flat annual fee your irrigation system will be shut-down properly and started up properly as well as check on for any issues. If you've never considered an irrigation maintenance agreement, there's no time like to present...like changing the oil in your car...it will give your irrigation system more longevity.

Monday, September 6, 2010

Do you know the optimal pressure for an irrigation system?

Most people don't but its around 45 psi. Irrigation systems are best designed around that figure and flow. Many parts of Atlanta have water pressure that exceeds 100 psi so be sure that when you get your new irrigation system estimate that you ask what your water pressure is and about a pressure regulator which will save you problems later.

Irrigation Systems: Rain Sensor versus Rain Freeze sensor

The title should explain itself. However, I get asked all the time do I really need a "freeze" sensor. If you properly winterization your irrigation system at the right time then no. If you're one of these folks that believes winterization in Georgis isn't necessary - think about last winter. Not only will your system not run when it detects rain BUT when the temperature drops below a certain temperature. Bump it up a notch and get both with Hunter's Solar Sync which also takes history of humidity, temp, etc. and waters only what you need and is slightly more expensive then a rain/freeze sensor and does more.

Outdoor Lighting and Security

Ya know, I never thought about it until our customer last week said, "I like the way the outdoor lights make my house look at night but I really want them so I feel safer when I'm outdoors at dark." Made perfect sense to me. So if you're considering outdoor lighting don't think of it as an aesthetics thing...think of it is a security thing too.

New Irrigation System Companies: Warranties

Will the irrigation company you've choosen for your new irrigation system be there to back-up the warranty they promised you? Is that warranty in writing? Unfortunately, in our business new "companies" come & go each spring. So when considering who to use for your new irrigation system often you get what you pay for. Be sure to research, check references, insurance before deciding on which company to use so that you can feel more comfortable that your irrigation company will there when a warranty situation arises. There are many reputable, long-standing companies in Atlanta - choose wisely.

Proper Irrigation Watering Times

Ok I've given you the statistics about how many of us (myself included) over-water our lawns....one thing to help you out a little bit is...shaded areas need less water because they have a slower evaporation rate of water than a real sunny area. So when setting your irrigation watering times, think about that! Or be super certain, and get a new smart controller that does that for you!

Irrigation Repair in Mcdonough

Experience counts with irrigation repair but knowledge I'd as important. When you choose an irrigation company to service your sprinkler system in McDonough-make sure they have the experience & knowledge

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Rainy days really get me down....

particularly, as you all know, when someone's spinkler system is running. My son told me he saw it yesterday. Next time there's water restrictions maybe we'll all think more about it. A rain sensor is very inexpensive and makes sure that doesn't happen.

Irrigation Low Pressure

Do you have an irrigation system with low pressure?

Nozzles can go a long way to helping to make better a low pressure irrigation system. Sometimes low pressure is caused by development and sometimes it's a faulty irrigation design. Rotator nozzles are a great water efficient fix in an existing irrigation situation with low pressure. Even rotary nozzles can be changed to lower the amount of water coming out of them to help as well.

3 most important irrigation system components-irrigation repair atlanta

Ok, well what I'm about to tell you are the 2 state required elements of an irrigation system and the one that is highly recommended to help you later.
The state requires backflow prevention and a rain sensor - at a minimum - tomorrow on irrigationatlanta.blogspot.com, I'll tell you the differences between the types of backflow prevention devices that are the most commonly used.
The last item is a separate shut off valve...meaning a valve that will shut your irrigation system off in the event of a leak or something of that nature. I feel bad when I can get my staff out to a call where there is no shut off and water is leaking. The only other alternative is the shut off the meter that feeds the house too.

Thursday, August 19, 2010

What do you do when your irrigation system has a leak?

Well the obvious answer to this question is to turn it off. Did you know just turning off your controller (clock) won't stop the water from flowing at the leak location? A separate shut off valve for your irrigation system should have been installed which would allow you to turn off the flow of water to the system. This shut off is separate from your house water shutoff. Worse case? You can shut off the house water if you don't have an irrigation shut off but it's obviously a pain to do so. If you're one of those people with a separate shut off and your system is leaking, when you have your irrigation system repaired, inquiry about installation of a shut off valve. It's a small price to pay in case there are leaks in the future.

Irrigation Systems....Rain Sensors

On my way back from the airport on Saturday while it had been and was raining south of Atlanta, I passed a large chain of convenience/gas stores who sprinkler system was running despite the substantial rainfall that had already happened and it was current raining. What a waste of water! The way to resolve this problem is simple and inexpensive - it's a rain sensor!

Irrigation System Audits

What is an irrigation system audit? And what should it include?

On a residential irrigation system, a complete irrigation system audit should provide confirmation of not only proper coverage but also preciptation rates, head location and type, nozzle types and alignment.

Be sure to ask your irigation auditor to give you a written report and any available comparisons that will show you how recommended improvements will increase the efficiency of your irrigation system.

Wet Spots/Dry Spots - Irrigation System

Overly wet? Overly dry spots? Due to plant growth or possibly improper improper design, you may need more than just adjustments to some of your sprinkler heads to resolve these types of problems. Possible solutions are new heads, nozzles and moving sprinkler heads.

Irrigation System Atlanta

I took a little break from my blog the last few days and during that time I noticed what has become my new pet peeve...why do people, even irrigation professionals, find it necessary to run irrigation at 2 in the afternoon when it's 98 degress outside? Based on what I know, I think you have more evaporation of water that root watering. It's like spraying plant leaves with a squirt bottle and thinking you've watered the plant. The best time to water is either early morning or late evening.......

Irrigation System Pumps

An irrigation pump is a great water to save on water and use what nature gives us. If you are thinking about a irrigation pump system, either a new one or coverting over to one, be sure that your irrigation company understands the hydraulics of how pump systems work and what facts must be considered when designing or coverting a system over to an irrigation system pump.

In closing...Smart Irrigation Month

I gave you some tips throughout June on things you could do to make your irrigation system more efficient - a lot of the tips I gave you were simple and inexpensive. Let me know - did you use any of them or implement any of my ideas?

While Smart Irrigation Month only comes once a year, to preserve our most precious resource - WATER - we should be smart all year long about our water usage. Tiny steps in efficiency can go a long way. Just think....3 little things that save you 3-5% of water = as much as a 15% savings for you overall.

Be smart about irrigation all year long.

Smart Irrigation Month.....Different Plant Types

If you have different plant types on one zone of irrigation consider possibly replacing it with drip irrigation which will allow you to customize more of the amount of water delivered to those areas. If your system was properly designed, there would not be a mixture of low water and high water zones but drip is one way you can make it work for you.

Cycle & Soak

Interestingly a lot of controllers have a "cycle & soak" option but very few people use it because they don't exactly know what it means including irrigation contractors. "Cycle & Soak" is simple....it allows programming of multiple watering times for much shorter periods of time. Thus is cycles and then breaks to allow the water to "soak" into the soil. This is great for areas where water drains off quickly due to soil types or even sloped areas.

High (or low) irrigation system water pressure

High pressure blowing out your heads, valves? Do your irrigation system heads spray a mist? If your sprinkler heads are misting that means that the water isn't reaching your sprinkler heads at the best possible water flow rate. Low water pressure can keep your irrigation system from giving good coverage too. There are many solutions to try a regular pressure regulator helps the best in many situation to regulate the water pressure on the entire system and should be used in high pressure situations. Heads with pressure regulating stems help with the misting and are fairly inexpensive. Rotary nozzles can help distribute water more effectively in low flow situations as well as valves with flow control can help in situations with varied landscapes.

Irrigation System Repairs: A simple upgrade can go along way!

When having your irrigation system repaired, many simple upgrades can go a long way such as a rain sensor or backflow prevention (both required since 2005).

But if you have a Rainbird ESP controller ask your irrigation company about upgrading the faceplate to the new Rainbird ESP-SMT which is a super efficient water saving controller.

A word about Smart Controllers for Irrigation...

SMART IRRIGATION MONTH: A smart controller is only as good as the information it receives. Some of the information comes from the weather stations or is paged into the smart controller, part of it is input by your irrigation company. Ask questions and make sure your irrigation company in Atlanta knows what information is needed and that it is input properly.

Monday, July 12, 2010

I can't say it enough..........RAIN SENSORS

I can't say it enough....that is the importance of Rain Sensors. Not only have rain sensors been required on all new irrigation system installations since 2005 but they can help you save as much as 30% on your water bill as opposed to an irrigation system with out one. A rain sensor is very inexpensive and will pay for itself in one season!

APRIL FOOL'S!!!

Don’t be fooled by contractors who claim they can save you money by auditing your irrigation system water usage. It takes a substantial amount of skill, knowledge and training to properly do an irrigation audit of any size and most residential irrigation systems benefit the most from Smart controllers and ET systems.

Smart Irrigation Month

RAINBIRD ESP-SMT WATER EFFICIENT CONTROLLER

GOOD AFTERNOON!

Today is the very first day of Smart Irrigation Month! When you call an irrigation company, don't forget to inquire about water efficient products.

-When you're green grass springs back up after you step on it, that means your grass does NOT need to be watered.

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Smart Irrigation Month Starts July 1st

This is my last tip leading up to Smart irrigation month, which starts tomorrow.

- A seperate irrigation meter is a great way to save money when watering your lawn. When you have an irrigation system connected to a regular water meter, you pay not only for the water but you pay for it at a sewer rate. When you have a seperate irrigation meter you only pay for water you use when watering your lawn. You could save up to 10% on your water bill with a seperate irrigation meter.

Getting down to the wire: 29th day, 29th tip

If you're landscape has steep inclines, ask your irrigation company about heads that have check-valves in them. Not only will this keep your sprinkler head from leaking water and wasting water, but it will save you money too by keeping more water in your irrigation pipes.

Monday, June 28, 2010

Tip for June 28th.........

Have low pressure on your sprinkler system? It could be many things that are causing this from a defective backflow prevention device to a broken pipe. Have your irrigation repair company in Atlanta check out water pressure issues so that your system will be working at it's very best.

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Tip 27 - New Irrigation System: Pipe Size

Pipe size does matter when a new irrigation system is being installed. The smaller the pipe the less gallons per minute of water that can flow through it and the larger pipe size the more. When your irrigation system is being installed ask what pipe size and schedule (schedule 40 is the standard - it's thinner walled or schedule 200 it's thicker wall but restricts more water flow). If your property has a steep hill, ask how they will handle that. It often requires larger pipe to maintain proper water flow so that you don't having "weak" sprinkler heads! Proper pipe size is a design element of irrigation systems and the most crucial component.

26th "Smart" Irrigation Tip

We are nearing the end of June and it's almost time to start implementing some of the tips during "Smart" Irrigation Month which is July. Have a specific question? Ask it here or email me at carla@milleniumirrigation.com.

Tip for today: Keep up with your water bills - sounds simple but make sure you check it out every month. If you notice a big increase over last year when you were watering with your irrigation system or from last month, walk through your system, check your valve boxes, look for bubbling water from leaks. Then run the system station (zone) by station and see if you see anything out of the ordinary. If you do, shut off the system at your system's shut off and call in an irrigation repair company in Atlanta. GOOD NEWS: Most water companies will adjust your bill if you provide proof of a leak and it has been repaired.

Friday, June 25, 2010

June 25th "Smart" Irrigation Tip...........

It is always smart when watering a sloped area of landscape with your irrigation system to water in two or more short cycles to eliminate water run-off and waste. Shoter cycles mean less run-off and allows the ground time to absorb more of the water.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

"Smart" Irrigation Tip for June 24th....

Did you know that soil type, plant type and a whole lot of other factors go into making sure your landscape gets proper watering from your irrigation system? The great thing about the new ET systems and smart controllers on the market are that some of them take into account these factors and more to efficiently and effectively water your landscape. By attaching a simple, inexpensive ET system such as Hunter's Solar Sync you could save up to 30% on your water usage (we did!) and it more than pays for itself in a season. What even more efficiency - check out Rainbird's ESP-Smart Controller!

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

June 23rd brings the 23rd tip for Smart Irrigation Month

There are many sensors available in today's market for irrigation systems. They range from basic rain sensors to et systems that increase the overall efficiency of your irrigation system. A basic rain sensor will shut off your irrigation system during rain or immediately after rain to prevent over-watering as your irrigation system is meant to supplement natural rainfall. ET systems are a little more expensive but take into account not only rainfall, temperature, humidity and evaporation of water from the ground to provide the most efficient water usage. A standard rain sensor could save you 6-7% each year on water usage and an ET systems can save you between 10-40% on water usage. Both options are fairly inexpensive and often pay for themselves in one season!

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Tip 22: Irrigation Smart Controllers

What is a smart controller? A smart controller is just that "smart." Based on readings taken from a sensor or information sent to the controller, a smart controller decides where, when and how much water your irrigation system puts out. For the most part, it takes the human 'guessing factor' out of the equation and does exactly what an irrigation system is supposed to do...supplement natural rainfall along with taking into account soil types and evaporation.

Monday, June 21, 2010

Tip #21: What to do once your new irrigation system is completed..

Once you have your new irrigation system installed make sure your irrigation company in Atlanta walks-thru the system with you and shows you where your irrigation shut-off is, your rain sensor, programming times and even how to make minor adjustments to your sprinkler heads.

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Tip #20: Ask about irrigation products that are water efficient

Whether your having your irrigation system repaired or getting a new one installed, be sure to ask your irrigation contractor about water efficient products. Not only will it save you money but your contractor should be able to make recommendations about which products will work best for your situation.

Lastly, to all the fathers...HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Tip #19: Learning to use your irrigation controller (clock)

Instruction manuals are often more confusing than helpful. Ask your irrigation professional to show you how to program your irrigation controller after installation so that you can make changes to the length of time that it waters your landscape. If you have an existing irrigation system and have a repair completed, ask your irrigation repair company to show you how to do the basic things with your irrigation controller. Keep in mind, however, irrigation professionals should be knowledgable about the minimum amount of water, in addition to natural rainfall, required to keep your landscape in tip-top shape. Sometimes minor timing adjustments will need to be made due to soil type or seasons. It is an smart irrigation customer who will use the minimum amount of water to keep things lush and green.

Friday, June 18, 2010

Tip #18...Verification of Utilities prior to irrigation installation

This is another one of those "smart" tips....state law requires that the public utilities be located at any property where digging is going to occur. Be sure to ask your irrigation contractor about doing the utility locates either on-line or by calling 811. Anyone who fails to call for utility locates prior to digging is subject to a pretty stiff fine from the state. So please make sure your irrigation company in Atlanta - "calls before they dig."

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Tip #17: Sprayers and Your Irrigation System

Choosing a sprayer is as important as choosing an rotor for your irrigation system. Nozzles become extremely important as well as placement of sprinkler system sprayers. Nozzles will dictate how far the water will go. If you chose to put your sprayers at the back of plantings, you will need to check for growth every year and probably have to change the sprayers every so often (add risers, etc.). It is our preference not to sprayer towards a home, however, due to varying landscape sometimes you have to place sprayers spraying towards a home. Again nozzles play an important role her to ensure that water isn't being sprayed directly into the foundation of your home.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Tip #16: Choosing an efficient rotary sprinkler head

Our industry is ever changing and irrigation water efficiency products are all around us. When choosing a rotary sprinkler head for your irrigation system you should consider whether or not there are there elevation changes, the way the head sprays water, adjustability and efficiency. For elevation changes, there are check valves that keep water from drizzling out of the heads when the irrigation cycle is complete. Ask your irrigation contractor to demonstrate or for photos of the rotary heads in action, you will then be able to see how they spray water differently. Ask your irrigation contractor to show you how to adjust your rotary heads so that you can make adjustments as your yard's landscape changes.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Tip #15: Smart Irrigation Systems, even watering rates

Your irrigation contractor should know the importance of even water rates (in the industry this is known as "proper precipitation rates"). This is part of the proper design of your irrigation system and it is crucial for water efficiency that your system is set up to evenly distribute water from each head. This is one of the main things that we see on the repair side of our business that is done improperly. In most cases and if the heads are properly placed, a nozzle change can even out the watering and create the even watering that irrigation systems are meant to have.

Monday, June 14, 2010

Tip #14: Rain Sensors and beyond

I have talked before about the importance of an irrigation rain sensor. As I continue my tips for July's Smart Irrigation Month, I am once again blogging about the importance of that. It drives me crazy when I see an irrigation system running in the rain because as I said before an irrigation system is meant to supplement rainfall. What a huge waste of water!

Since 2005 it has been state law that all new irrigation systems have a rain sensor. It will save you money, in some cases, as much as 15% over time. If you went as far as to get an automated irrigation system installed why should you have to run and cut it off at the threat of rain? Our current special is 10% of all water efficient products on irrigation repair calls. Believe me it is smart to have a rain sensor that will pay for itself in less than a season.

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Tip #13: Irrigation Backflow Prevention

Yes my tips are meant to help with water efficiency but I think Smart Irrigation Month is really about more than just that and being "smart" overall. What's not smart? Not having a backflow prevention device - a testable one. Although a dual check and double check sound the same they are very different. A double check backflow prevention device offers you the highest level of protection for you and your family from a potentially toxic situation. A double check is not meant for a situation such as this. Not sure if you have either - check near your water meter for a device that looks like this one. If you don't have it, for the safety of not only your family but everyone around you, get one.

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Tip #12: Irrigation System Warranties

A Warranty is typically given for a period of time on new irrigation installations but if the irrigation company that installs your system can't back up the Warranty then it's useless to you. We receive many calls each week from customers who cannot locate the company that installed their sprinkler system. They were promised a warranty and the company is no longer in business or not reachable. This is tip #12 because it is going to save you money in the long run if you have problems and an irrigation professional will provide good service after the sale including resolution of problems that may arise as well as tweaking your system to ensure that your irrigation system is working at it's best.

Also, make sure you understand the terms of your Warranty - if your not sure, ask - and make sure your Warranty is in writing not verbal.

Friday, June 11, 2010

Tip #11: Georgia outdoor water restrictions

It is always important to follow the watering rules or restrictions when watering your landscape. June 1st Governor Perdue approved new watering rules in Georgia. You may water anyday between 4 pm and 10 am. Got new landscape or sod? You can water anytime for the first 30 days.

Remember, your irrigation system should supplement the natural rainfall and watering everyday is not necessary.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Tip #10: Irrigation Systems vs. Rain

Did you know that your irrigation system is supposed to supplement the natural rainfall? I bet logically you answered "yes." Reality is that a lot of people see their irrigation system as "how they water their lawn." You lawn is watered by the rain and your irrigation system is meant to just supplement that rainfall. My point is that this reinterates the importance of rain sensors and ET devices to ensure that you are always just "supplementing" the natural rainfall and not overwatering.

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Tip #9: Inspections

Regularly inspect your irrigation system equipment...your sprinkler heads, controller, etc. Don't assume that your system is working properly. Take the time to inspect it because you never know when the kids, maid or wife have ran over a sprinkler head!

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Tip #8: Winterization of Irrigation System

Because we never know what kind of winter we will get here in Atlanta, I highly recommend winterizing your irrigation system. Not only will proper winterization maintain the integrity of your irrigation system but it will also prevent pipe breaks and thereby, increase the efficiency of your system.

Monday, June 7, 2010

Tip #7: How much water should I use?

Irrigation contractors should be well versed in the watering needs of various types of grass and plants. The minimum amount of water should be use to provide to your landscapes. We recommend that if you feel that your irrigation system isn't getting enough water to your landscape, increase only by 1 minute. Different soil types absorb and retain water differently so your neighbor may use more or less than you do.

Tip #6:New Irrigation System

Be sure that when you hire an irrigation company in atlanta that they follow the manufacturer's specifications for installation of the irrigation system as this will increase the efficiency of your new irrigation system.

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Tip #5: Regular Inspection of Irrigation System

Be sure you visually inspect your irrigation system frequently to check for heads that need adjusting, confirmation of proper amounts of water, leaks, landscape changes, etc.

Friday, June 4, 2010

Tip #4: Lower your water bill for your irrigation system

Make sure your irrigation contractor is experienced enough to properly design your new irrigation system . Proper design is the first key factor in any new irrigation system specifically the understanding of the hydraulics of an irrigation system such as water flow and pressure.

Thursday, June 3, 2010

Tip #3: Increasing the Efficiency of Your Irrigation System

Over watering is the most expensive mistake people make when they have an irrigation system, proper watering time based around the landscape in your yard. You should always water the minimum time necessary for your landscape.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Smart Irrigation Month....Tip #2

We want you to follow through on these tips - accumulate them all and use what you need to increase the efficiency of your irrigation system in July which is Smart Irrigation Month....

Tip #2: Regular maintenance, just like you do on your car, will preserve your irrigation system for many years to come and help maintain efficient watering!

Ooops...June 1st Irrigation Efficiency Tip

Sorry guys - the 1st tip for the Month of June got posted on the other blog, so here it is:

Tip #1: Make sure that your irrigation system is evenly distributing water. Make adjustments at least each year and move heads, if necessary, to ensure even watering is evenly maintained for growing plants.

Irrigation Repair Atlanta

Today's topic....BACKFLOW PREVENTION....the State of Georgia requires backflow prevention in order to keep irrigation water from backing up into drinking water. When an irrigation company comes out to repair your system ask them to check to see if you have backflow prevention and to see if it appears to be working properly.

New Irrigation Products

We have begun testing several new and exciting irrigation products ranging from controllers to heads to sensors. As always, we test everything first before we offer it to you, our customers. Next week we will be looking at some new irrigation system components and doing some demonstration's to our staff. Look for some pictures then and some additional information on our findings.

Sprinkler Repair Atlanta

I cannot stress the importanance enough of choosing a reputable irrigation company even for your sprinkler repair. Be sure to ask if they warrant their repair work and even how long they've been in business. I've gotten several calls lately where the customer had their system repaired this winter or early spring and are having the same problems...some of these customers cannot even locate the company or contractor they used.

Irrigation Atlanta

Everyone is gearing up for the summer months...be sure to check out your irrigation system every couple of weeks. Take 5 minutes to run through it and walk around to see if there are any visible signs of something amiss. This will save you time and money later~

Save money, water efficiently by upgrading your irrigation system

As your lawn sprinkler ages it needs some maintenance just like a car. Upgrading your heads, nozzles, and making simple minor adjustments can make all the difference. If you don't have a rain sensor (required by State law after 2005) or a backflow prevention device, add those items to increase the safety and efficiency of your system.

Friday, May 14, 2010

New Irrigation System Installation

Today we will finish up our new irrigation system installation in Tyrone. If all goes well I'll have pictures later today. Word of caution: when chosing an irrigation company in Atlanta make sure they follow state and/or local requirements for rain sensors and backflow prevention.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Irrigation Installation: Basics

When chosing a company to install your new irrigation system, find out about products, warranties, time in business, and that they will meet or exceed the state requirements for rain sensors and backflow prevention.

Also, if you are not doing your entire yard, ask that it be prepped for future expansion as this will save you a lot of money later particularly if you use a different irrigation company for your add-on.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Irrigation Atlanta

Today I received a phone call from a customer that recently had a new irrigation system installed by another contractor. She has been unsucsessful in getting the problems resolved by that irrigation company.

Very few atlanta irrigation companies survived the drought and there are some really good ones out there but there are many new ones sprouting up all over Atlanta. When considering an irrigation company for your new irrigation system ask about the state requirements, how long have you been in business (ask for proof) and check them out as thoroughly as possible. It will save you a lot of trouble later.

Monday, May 10, 2010

Irrigation Backflow Prevention

I cannot stress the importance of proper backflow prevention for irrigation systems. This became state law in 2005 and many irrigation companies in Atlanta still are not complying. If you don't have a backflow prevention device on your system, get one today for your protection and the protection of those around you. If you are considering a new irrigation system, be sure that your irrigation contractor provides you with this necessary component.

Don't Wait til it rains!

Don't wait until it rains and you find your sprinkler system watering at the same time to get an inexpensive rain sensor installed. This has been the law for over 5 years and still not being complied with by many irrigation contractors in Atlanta.

Take things a step forward with the innovative irrigation products in the market today using evaporation technology to help conserve water. Believe it or not, these smart controllers and sensors are very affordable.

Many thanks to Mike and Andy of Rainbird as well as Tony from Central Irrigation. We spent some time together this afternoon exploring products and water efficiency solutions. In our business it is great to see partnership building, exploration and exchange of ideas that will benefit the irrigation industry as a whole. Effective use of water with irrigation systems should be a very serious business and I appreciate seeing a large sprinkler manufacturer taking it seriously. Thanks!

New Irrigation System Installation: Hampton

Today we will begin the new irrigation system installation at Worthington's Christmas Tree farm in Hampton. This is the first phase in our irrigation system at Worthington's as we are starting with the residence and the second phase will consist of the tree farm itself.

Irrigation Systems

I'm so shocked that every where I go it seems no one has a rain sensor! After our drought in Atlanta, it would seem prudent to put one in for every irrigation installation (we do!) not to mention it is the law. If you don't have a rain sensor for your irrigation system, it's a small investment that will save you money and wasted water in the long run.

Welcome....

Since doing the Kia Motors plant irrigation installation I've rapidly become known as "The Irrigation Girl" so I thought I would start to blog my thoughts and try to help out those with irrigation or lawn sprinkler questions.
