New Irrigation Systems Fayetteville
If you are considering a new irrigation system and you live in Fayette County, you should consider a couple of things. First, make sure that your new irrigation system meets minimum state requirements with rain sensor and backflow prevention. If you live inside the city of Peachtree City, a permit is required for the backflow prevention. An experience and knowledgeable irrigation contractor should explain these items to you when completing your irrigation system quote.

As we are having this preview of spring weather to come, watch for indications of irrigation leaks in your irrigation system. Expanding and shrinking of pipes will often cause irrigation leaks to rear their head during a warm period. Ways to know you have a leak: standing water in areas that normally don't have it, overly wet spots, or an increase in your water bill.

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

Considering a new irrigation system? Now is by far the best time of year to plan, get your quotes and complete installation of your new irrigation system. Why? Your grass is dormant (if it's a warm season grass) and will recover more quickly if your irrigation system is installed while it's dormant. You will probably find it less expensive to install this time of year too.

Proper water scheduling is essential to maintaining a great landscape appearance and health. With odd/even watering, most irrigation companies in Atlanta timed watering based on a guess. An experience irrigation contractor will take into account the amount of sun, soil type, landscape stress along with other factors to determine the proper amount of time to run irrigation for the most efficient and effective management of your irrigation system watering.

Hunter Solar Sync

The Hunter Solar Sync is a rain sensor on steroids and an ET system (evaprotranspiration). Not only will the Solar Sync shut off the system when it's raining, prevent it from watering after rainfall but it will also automatically adjust the watering time based on the ET. Evaporation of water from the soil + usage of water by plants = ET. This is a very inexpensive way to have a super, water efficient irrigation system using some of the very latest technology.

Irrigation System Atlanta Rain Sensor
So, rain sensors work one of two ways. Either (1) by immediately shutting off the irrigation system at the first sign of rain (usually .10") or (2) at a set amount of rain (also usually .10"). An rain sensor will also prevent the irrigation system from running if it detects wetness within the sensor itself. For instance, it rains at 3 am and your system goes on at 5 am. The sensor should prevent additional and unncessary irrigation. Nothing drives me more crazy than to see an irrigation system running in the rain. Your irrigation system is meant to supplement rainfall to increase the beauty and health of your landscape.

Take a quick look at your irrigation system. Do you have rotors (the ones that move) and sprayers (fixed) mixed together on a zone? If so you are definitely getting uneven watering and that needs to be corrected. Simply making that correction will save you some money. Mixing head types on a zone is a big no-no.

Make sure you have your backflow prevention device tested to ensure it is working properly. Some counties, such as Coweta, require annual testing and reporting. Others require annual testing but do not follow up for confirmation. Backflow prevention is the only way to prevent your irrigation water from mixing in with your drinking water if your irrigation system is tied into the same meter as your drinking water. See my separate post about separate irrigation meters as a great alternative which helps you save money in the long run by not paying sewer rates BUT there is upfront costs to consider.

To prevent damage to your irrigation system and lower your overall irrigation costs, establish a maintenance schedule with a reputable irrigation company in Atlanta. At a minimum your system should be winterized, activated in the spring as well as inspected in the spring for any repairs or adjustments that need to be made. In most cases you also save over having winter and spring service done separately, in addition to discounts if repairs are necessary.

We are beginning to enter what I like to call the "quoting season" for irrigation systems in Atlanta. If you are looking to get a new irrigation system, this is a great time not only for planning but for doing. Prices of pipe and components are related to crude oil prices and as those rise so do pricing of those irrigation parts. Keep in mind also that as the spring gets closer many irrigation companies in Atlanta see price increases from their distributors as well. Lastly, don't forget that installing a system now will give your dormant grass an opportunity to recover this season.

Irrigation System Watering Times
Rarely in the winter time is it necessary for a residential irrigation system to run in the Atlanta area. The highest demand for water for your landscape is the summertime. Be sure that your automatic irrigation controller is setup for increased times in the summer time based on the needs of your irrigation system. If you are unsure how much time your landscape needs, a simple audit of your system can offer you direction and also offers way you can improve your water efficiency.

As your plants mature it may be necessary to move or add sprinkler heads for proper coverage of those plants. When adding a sprinkler head to an existing irrigation system it is important that your irrigation contractor take into account your irrigation system's hydralic capability. Sometimes sprinkler heads cannot be added due to water flow limitations. In cases like this moving sprinkler heads and changing nozzles can often correct the problem.

Here's one way you can save on your irrigation water bill:
-Mulch, yes mulch. By applying mulch in your beds it helps retain the water & thereby can reduce the amount of water needed to give proper watering to your plants.

Sprinkler Heads Irrigation Atlanta
Would you like to save up to 30-40% on your current water bill? Consider replacing your existing sprinkler heads with pressure compensating sprinkler heads. Pressure compensating sprinkler heads improve overall uniformity of watering. By pressure compensating heads heres what I mean: these sprinkler heads are internally regulated to control water flow at a particular pressure level (for instance, 40 psi). Most irrigation systems sprinkler heads start strong and by the time you get to the last head, it's water flow is weak. By going to a pressure compensating sprinkler heads, the water flow is regulated through all the heads, thereby giving you even watering and saving you money!

When having your irrigation system repaired, be sure that your irrigation controller is programmed for you and the changing needs of your irrigation system. Most irrigation controllers have more than one program available. Ask your irrigation repair technician to set up a spring/fall & summer program as your watering needs will most likely increase in the summer time.
