Benefits of Professional Irrigation Installation

he Irrigation Associations "Irrigation Best Management Practices" provides that "the irrigation system shall be designed to be efficient and UNIFORMLY distribute the water." We see so many systems on the repair side of our business that are designed improperly. Design is the first cruicial step to assuring that you have an irrigation system that works properly. Anybody can throw pipe in the ground and call it irrigation, an irrigation professional

does so much more.

To Winterization by Sprinkler System or Not???

While most irrigation system pipes should be well below the frost line in Georgia, it is still important to have your irrigation system winterized because you never know what kind of winter we are going to have here in Georgia. Particularly important are you valves because while they are underground they are still exposed and those connection points have a tendency to be the first area of breaks after a cold winter.

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

This is an excellent time of year to get your new irrigation system installed. If you've been thinking about getting an irrigation system, fall is a great time to do so. That way your yard is ready for next spring. Ask to make sure your irrigation company is it complying with state regulations (backflow prevention & rain sensors) and about warranties.

Winterizing Your Lawn Sprinkler System

So you don't think you need to winterize your irrigation system? At least do these couple of things, shut off the water. Run your system for about few seconds to clear as much water as possible. Unplug your controller. You aren't fully protected as you would be with a professional winterization but it's better than nothing. If you don't have a separate shut off for your irrigation system, your system is really at risk in the winter because water remains in the pipe. Consider having a shutoff installed.

Lawn Sprinkler Water Efficiency

What's the latest in irrigation system efficiency products? Wireless soil sensors! These sensors are placed in each irrigation zone and they measure moisture and temperature at the root level. Information is transmitted in real time 24 hours a day to a base station that works in conjunction with the existing irrigation controller.
The base station determines when your grass and/or plants have reached their optimum moisture level in each zone. The soil sensors' accurate information only allows the watering the plants need. This means a reduction in wasted water and possibly your water bill!

Atlanta Landscape Irrigation

Power outages or wiring repairs to landscape irrigation systems could cause delays for watering times. In the heat of summer, this could prove fatal to your lawn. Instead of watching your landscape turn an ugly shade of brown, opt for a battery-operated controller.

Atlanta Lawn Sprinkler Repair

Been receiving a lot of emergency calls lately because the irrigation systems don't have separate shut offs or double check backflow preventors which would allow you to turn your system off in the event of a "water" emergency. So, while have your irrigaiton systems repaired, ask your irrigation technician if you have a way to shut off your system in an emergency and if not, at least get a gate valve installed to shut off the water. Your only other choice will be to cut off all the water, including that to your house, if you have an lawn sprinkler issue.

Any one figure out the answer to yesterday's question about matched precip rates? Let me know. There are a lot of new controller's on the market that allow us, the irrigation contractor, to control watering for you from a PC or make it easy for you to control it and your landscape lighting too.

Thursday, May 5, 2011

Efficient Lawn Sprinkler Systems

Ever heard of matched precipitation rates? It is important that the rates of water from your sprinkler heads are "matched." This helps to ensure even watering. Think of it like this: Square yard, heads on each corner putting out 2.5 gpm. The head in the center going full circle should be "matched" to ensure proper watering. What should that rate be? (Experts, think of this in simple terms do not complicate things!) The answer tomorrow.

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

Proper water scheduling is essential to maintaining a great landscape appearance and health. With odd/even watering, most irrigation companies in Atlanta timed watering based on a guess. An experience irrigation contractor will take into account the amount of sun, soil type, landscape stress along with other factors to determine the proper amount of time to run irrigation for the most efficient and effective management of your irrigation system watering.

Hunter Solar Sync

The Hunter Solar Sync is a rain sensor on steroids and an ET system (evaprotranspiration). Not only will the Solar Sync shut off the system when it's raining, prevent it from watering after rainfall but it will also automatically adjust the watering time based on the ET. Evaporation of water from the soil + usage of water by plants = ET. This is a very inexpensive way to have a super, water efficient irrigation system using some of the very latest technology.

Irrigation System Atlanta Rain Sensor

So, rain sensors work one of two ways. Either (1) by immediately shutting off the irrigation system at the first sign of rain (usually .10") or (2) at a set amount of rain (also usually .10"). An rain sensor will also prevent the irrigation system from running if it detects wetness within the sensor itself. For instance, it rains at 3 am and your system goes on at 5 am. The sensor should prevent additional and unncessary irrigation. Nothing drives me more crazy than to see an irrigation system running in the rain. Your irrigation system is meant to supplement rainfall to increase the beauty and health of your landscape.

Irrigation Repair Atlanta

Take a quick look at your irrigation system. Do you have rotors (the ones that move) and sprayers (fixed) mixed together on a zone? If so you are definitely getting uneven watering and that needs to be corrected. Simply making that correction will save you some money. Mixing head types on a zone is a big no-no.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

Make sure you have your backflow prevention device tested to ensure it is working properly. Some counties, such as Coweta, require annual testing and reporting. Others require annual testing but do not follow up for confirmation. Backflow prevention is the only way to prevent your irrigation water from mixing in with your drinking water if your irrigation system is tied into the same meter as your drinking water. See my separate post about separate irrigation meters as a great alternative which helps you save money in the long run by not paying sewer rates BUT there is upfront costs to consider.

Monday, January 17, 2011

Atlanta Irrigation Repair

To prevent damage to your irrigation system and lower your overall irrigation costs, establish a maintenance schedule with a reputable irrigation company in Atlanta. At a minimum your system should be winterized, activated in the spring as well as inspected in the spring for any repairs or adjustments that need to be made. In most cases you also save over having winter and spring service done separately, in addition to discounts if repairs are necessary.

Sunday, January 16, 2011

Irrigation Systems Atlanta

We are beginning to enter what I like to call the "quoting season" for irrigation systems in Atlanta. If you are looking to get a new irrigation system, this is a great time not only for planning but for doing. Prices of pipe and components are related to crude oil prices and as those rise so do pricing of those irrigation parts. Keep in mind also that as the spring gets closer many irrigation companies in Atlanta see price increases from their distributors as well. Lastly, don't forget that installing a system now will give your dormant grass an opportunity to recover this season.

Friday, January 14, 2011

Irrigation System Watering Times

Rarely in the winter time is it necessary for a residential irrigation system to run in the Atlanta area. The highest demand for water for your landscape is the summertime. Be sure that your automatic irrigation controller is setup for increased times in the summer time based on the needs of your irrigation system. If you are unsure how much time your landscape needs, a simple audit of your system can offer you direction and also offers way you can improve your water efficiency.

As your plants mature it may be necessary to move or add sprinkler heads for proper coverage of those plants. When adding a sprinkler head to an existing irrigation system it is important that your irrigation contractor take into account your irrigation system's hydralic capability. Sometimes sprinkler heads cannot be added due to water flow limitations. In cases like this moving sprinkler heads and changing nozzles can often correct the problem.

If your having overspray from your sprinkler heads they may need to be adjusted, moved and/or changed to reduce overspray and runoff. Since 58% of our typical water usage goes towards landscape watering making these simple changes can benefit you in water savings.

Sprinkler Heads Irrigation Atlanta

Would you like to save up to 30-40% on your current water bill? Consider replacing your existing sprinkler heads with pressure compensating sprinkler heads. Pressure compensating sprinkler heads improve overall uniformity of watering. By pressure compensating heads heres what I mean: these sprinkler heads are internally regulated to control water flow at a particular pressure level (for instance, 40 psi). Most irrigation systems sprinkler heads start strong and by the time you get to the last head, it's water flow is weak. By going to a pressure compensating sprinkler heads, the water flow is regulated through all the heads, thereby giving you even watering and saving you money!

When having your irrigation system repaired, be sure that your irrigation controller is programmed for you and the changing needs of your irrigation system. Most irrigation controllers have more than one program available. Ask your irrigation repair technician to set up a spring/fall & summer program as your watering needs will most likely increase in the summer time.
